4th century Frankish statue of ingvi Freyr

4th Century AD Frankish statue of Ingvi Freyr. Before the Franks lost their way and turned to xtianity and the horrors of charlemagne etc etc they worshipped the same Germanic Gods as the other Germanic peoples. This statue is Ingvi Freyr (Freyr, Frey, Ingwaz, Ing) later noted as a brother to Freya and son to Njord.

Gregory of Tours was noted for mocking the Merovingian (Frankish) custom of travelling to the annual assembly in a wagon with a statue who had a large phallus, drawn by two cows to bring prosperity to the land. This custom was mirrored in other parts of the Germanic world when worshipping Nerthus. This is yet more evidence that Nerthus and Njord and that Ingvi Freyr and Freya were deeply connected if not the same Gods or divine twins?

The same customs were followed for these 4 Gods and Goddesses over different time periods in different countries. It is hard to objectively piece together the puzzle as so much information is missing so I tend to focus on Ingvi Freyr as we have a lot of information about him and he is God of the Angles and I am English.

The alliance of tribes called The Franks included two Ingvaeones tribes (named after Ingvi Freyr); the Ingvaeonic Salians at the Rhine delta and the Irminonic Ruparians who lived to the east of the Salii along the Rhine.
